Boat Parts – A bit expensive?
You know when I first began a marine business I thought for sure the cost of Boat Parts would be significantly less. After getting my feet wet in this business I realize there are multiple dimensions at play and not all as it seems.
The thought of purchasing anything marine is somewhat troublesome and is assumed that it will surly hurt the wallet. Although this is not always the case boat parts are more expensive for a good reason. I know their construction is designed for a particular purpose but also there are limitations in the supply leaving only a handful of manufacturers to choose from.
Now I’m talking about aftermarket items here not OEM. If you were to purchase a genuine Johnson Evinrude part or Mercury or Mercruiser part the cost in most cases is still significantly higher. Just like auto parts boat parts are cheaper in the aftermarket variety just a little harder to get.
One thing for sure is a quick trip to the auto parts store is much easier than finding items for a boat. Maybe if they were as abundant it wouldn’t be an issue but that is not the case and the limitations in supply cause for higher pricing. Remember though they are limited so they are higher not to mention only being used for a specific purpose.
I can say there is one part of this business I picked up on right away. The retail marine parts are completely different. It is not as simple as going down to the corner store and picking up what you need. The repair end of things seems to capitalize on the aftermarket parts while the OEM stores sell most of them. This is really backwards by comparison leaving the internet as a viable source.
Overall I would say most will find this post boring until they have to dip into their own wallet. Boat parts are more expensive but for some of us, the cost is just plain worth it!
care should be taken while purchasing the boat parts
